The film is loosely based on the discovery, in 1959, of the remains of a B-24 Liberator bomber, "Lady Be Good" in the Libyan desert, which crashed following a bombing raid on Naples in 1943.
While returning from a World War II bombing mission, a B-25 Mitchell bomber sustains damage from action with enemy fighters. Without any order to abandon the aircraft, the navigator Hamner (Basehart) panics and bails out. The aircraft and the remaining crew fly on for another 700 miles and eventually crash in the desert.
The "survivors" remain close to the wreckage of the aircraft, passing the time by playing baseball. In reality, the five crew members died in the plane's crash and as ghosts they have spent the last seventeen years at the site undiscovered, in limbo, longing for repatriation back to their home country.
