Mac is asked to do something he's never done before: while being taken hostage, he must try to prove the gunman's innocence. The episode starts with a bank robbery. There is a gunman (Elias Koteas) (later known as Ethan Scott) with hostages. The gunman makes three demands. One of them is a CSI. There is a dead body in the bank’s vault and he wants it proven that he did not kill the man. Mac goes in.
Mac eventually proves the gunman did not shoot the bank manager (the dead body). The evidence tells him that an hour earlier to the current bank robber, the bank was already robbed. Mac convinces the gunman to tell him everything.
