Thoughts on modelling books/tv eps/films

  1.
    1. I see you added "tv program".  It might be good to have TV eps as well, where they are linked to the program (i.e. "Hornblower" the tv program has eps including "Frogs and Lobsters" etc.)  Then we could have something on "character" saying "appears in tv show" like we have "appears in book".

      1. I was wondering about that. I filled in a bunch of data for the TV program and the characters/actors over here: http://www.freebase.com/view/guid/9202a8c04000641f800000000021fb03

I didn't know if there was a way to link in to those fields or if I have to do from scratch on my domain.

      2. There's going to be a new way to link those in very soon -- I'll let you know as soon as it's released, and help you set it up.

      3. I know I'm gonna need help with something I've cocked up. Louis Napoleon.

I wasn't paying attention and originally added Napoleon Bonaparte. So I thought that if I just renamed to Louis Napoleon it would also bring along the data from Wikipedia. Which it didn't.

So I thought I could just delete the entry and start over, but that seems to also be a problem.

GAH. How do I straighten that out?

      4. I straightened it out BH.

I reverted most if not all the changes you've made. My only advice for the future is to flag for Deletion only after great consideration.

Not to discourage anyone from doing so, if one encounters a page that appears to be completely empty (with virtually no meaningful data) and there is a pre-existing page that contains incoming and outgoing properties (articles from wiki, attributions, URLs, types, etc) you may then consider Deletion...When in doubt, choose Merge.

Your domain is looking good! Hornblower-esque fiction has always been one of my favorites. I have just read Victory of Eagles (yet another fantasy series that borrows heavily from  CS Forester). Another is the many sci-fi/naval military fiction books by John G Hemry (aka Jack Campbell).

      5. Now I know not to look at the domains in a parochial way. I assumed that if I deleted it would only affect my domain.

One thing though --  the article description is referring to Napoleon I aka Napoleon Bonaparte who is not the same person as Louis Napoleon. Louis Napoleon Bonaparte is the nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte.

It's Louis Napoleon aka Napoleon III that I want in the domain. Not Napoleon I.

So, for future reference, if I make this kind of mistake how can I remove a character that doesn't belong without making a mess?

      6. And also ... Glad you like the domain, gmackenz. I'm a HUGE fan of the Age of Sail and just love all sorts of seafaring stories.

      7. First of all, if a historical personage is a character in a fictional work (book, film, etc.) we prefer that you create a new fictional character of the appropriate name (Louis Napoleon) and in the fictional character properties is one for linking the fictional Louis to the actual real historical Louis.

So there can be one or more fictional Gaius Julius Caesarii all pointing to the source historical Caesar. There could be more than one fictional Julius Caesar due to the extreme liberties authors may have taken (eg Alternative Historical Fiction, Fantasy-based warring afterlife in Hell, Xenaverse, etc.)

So what I tend to do is open another browser window to freebase and search for the target topic, may have to go through several pages as most people/characters may not yet have enough linkages/data applied to make them bubble to the top of our relevance results...We're still in early days for our site/service. Create a new fictional character (if there isn't already a fictional character topic about the person) and link from that back into my domain/topic I wish to insert.

Removing characterization is easy, go to the topic you need to remove properties from and first go into the fictional character properties and delete the links you've created (eg. Napoleon, go into fictional properties and remove the link to your domain and any books the character was linked to). Then from the more options choose to remove type from the topic.

      8. Gordon, note that BH hasn't yet included the commons "Fictional Character" type, though I do want to lead her there in due course.  We'll keep the above in mind when we do so.
