In June of 2004, the Washington Capitals chose him with their seventh-round NHL Entry Draft selection, and Gordon decided after his junior year of college to go the professional route, signing a three-year, two-way, entry-level contract with Washington on April 3, 2007.
For the 2007-2008 season, Gordon played right wing for the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears, the Washington Capitals affiliate. In February of 2008, he was named RBK/AHL Player of the Week for the week ending February 10. Gordon ended the '08 season in Hershey with 50 points in 60 games.
