He was born David Kingshott in Twickenham, England, United Kingdom.
He left school at 12 and joined the Morton Fraser Harmonica Gang when he was 15. He did his National Service in the RAF and was in the unit's rep company. King returned to variety and later went solo. An appearance in Television Music Hall led to him comparing Show Case. He started as a comedian on television variety shows, being given his own show on the BBC in 1955. The next year he turned to singing while continuing his TV career. In the sixties into the seventies, he did The Dave King Show for ABC entertainment which was song, dance and comedy with famous guests of the day like Patrick Macnee in 1963 and Barbara Windsor in 1970. Also a run of Dave's Kingdom for ATV in 1964.
