The Portuguese national Anthem is a protected portuguese symbol under the 11th article of the portuguese Constitution. Music from Alfredo Keil and lyrics from Henrique Lopes de Mendonça, the "A Portuguesa" was created in the heated times of the British Ultimatum and became the march of the revolt of the 31st of January. For that reason, it was forbidden by the Monarch Regime in the power then. The Republican revolution of the 5th of October recovered has the Anthem and, on the 17th of November, the Ministery of War declared that everytime the "A Portuguesa" played all present military persons - with uniform - should make the continence and, if without uniform, must remove their hats, and keep standing until it finished.
Nevertheless, the official recognition only come with the publication in 1957, by resolution of the Ministers Counsil (The Cabinet) published in Diário do Governo, 1ª série, nº 199, dated from 4-9-1957 (4th September). Then a version of Symphonic Orchestra was made by Frederico de Freitas, and, based on it, a version of martial parade by major Lourenço Alves Ribeiro, inspector of the military bands.
