The film brings together actors Josh Brolin, Marisa Tomei, Danny Glover, Jasmine Guy, Viggo Mortensen, Kerry Washington, Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon, Sandra Oh, Sean Penn, Jasmine Guy, Rosario Dawson, and Don Cheadle, and contains musical performances by Bob Dylan, John Legend, Jackson Browne, Eddie Vedder, Randy Newman,Chris Robinson and Rich Robinson, and Bruce Springsteen to re-create the emotional impact of major moments in U.S. history. These readings, including several by the poet Martin Espada, are woven together with historical footage, music and narrations.
The film was shot on location in Boston, in the Cutler Majestic Theatre, and Malibu.
