Repo! The Genetic Opera before becoming a movie was originally a stage play created by Darren Smith and Terrance Zdunich. The ten minute opera was titled The Necromerchant's Debt which told the macabre tale of a graverobber and the Genetic Repoman. Due to the big success of the small opera Smith and Zdunich went on to make Repo! The Genetic Opera which was a stage play they played in its own theatre in New York in 2002. Darren Lynn Bousman who directed the feature film directed the first stage play.
