Williams was born in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, to African American parents. He attended Fullerton College. In 2000, Williams married television actress Simbi Khali (who played Nina Campbell in the television series 3rd Rock from the Sun) in Malibu, California.
Williams acted in a 1990 Fullerton College production of William Shakespeare's tragedy, Othello, which was directed by Tom Blank.
