Elvira won Computer Gaming World's 1991 Role Playing Game of the Year award. It was Horrorsoft's second published game, after "Personal Nightmare". The player's character has been called upon to rescue Elvira, for she has been kidnapped and is being held in her own castle. In the beginning of the game the player is captured, and then rescued by Elvira. She has lost her items and potions and the player needs to find them so she can get her powers back so she can resume control of the castle.
The game was reviewed in 1991 in Dragon #169 by Hartley, Patricia, and Kirk Lesser in "The Role of Computers" column. The reviewers gave the game 4 out of 5 stars.
