"This association is characterized by the dominance of sugar maple(Acer saccharum) covering at least 25% relative cover of the canopy and subcanopy combined... Common canopy associates include red maple (Acer rubrum), black cherry (Prunus serotina), northern red oak (Quercus rubra), American basswood (Tilia americana), sweet birch (Betula lenta), and yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis). Occasional associates are tuliptree (Liriodendron tulipifera) and hickories (Carya cordiformis, Carya ovata). Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) and white ash (Fraxinus americana) can occur as associates in disturbed stands. The canopy is usually closed (total cover 70–90%) and 15 to 25 m in height, depending on local site condition."
