Admin and coach

Have you gotten a chance to take a look at my suggestions for sports coaches and admin? Allowing us to get those coaches in there would be great. Also what are your thoughts about adding me as admin for baseball and football? I think that it would benefit Freebase a great deal.
-
I went ahead and made you an admin on baseball. You can try adding it yourself. If that goes well we can talk about other domains. Cheers.
-
Awsome. Thank you very much Dan. I really appreciate it. When I get some time, I will work on getting that in there. Thanks.
-
I will get coaches in there once my admin status is updated on sandbox. I want to make sure everthing looks good before I make it permanent.
-
Sounds like a good process. I went ahead and gave you admin status on sandbox now. Cheers.
-
Ah nice. I should be able to get to that this week sometime. Probably Thursday at the latest. I am a little busy this week with final exams and work. :(
-
Well I ended up getting some time tonight to add that all in. I think it is looking pretty good, so I put it in. I filled in the coaches for the Cardinals. Here is the link : http://www.freebase.com/view/en/st_louis_cardinals . Tell me what you think and if you have any suggestions or comments I would like to hear them. Thanks!

Looks pretty good here. Introducing the concept of 'started' is a little funky here. I see how its useful but it begs the 'stopped' (from/to) closure that has always plagued this modeling convention. It would be nice if Freebase could easily display all historical coaches and put the current ones at the top -- we could do it but its a little manual and makes the query for 'current coaching staff' more complicated.
Net-net, I think this looks fine. Thanks for doing it!
-
Yea I understand you on that from/to. Do you think that I should remove the started property? It doesn't matter to me because I do not feel the started property is too essential right now. I just thought that it might be nice touch to current coaches. I am going to make some finishing touches to football coaches sometime either today or later this week. I will let you know when I would like for you to take a look over that.
-
I think its OK. Let's see if people use it.
I've heard from Jason about some of the problems you've been having with football coach modeling -- I'd recommend a simple model where the front office staff is stored in the employer type, employee property and the coaching staff is stored in the current coaches property, sorted by title. If this doesn't make sense, I can populate an example for you to show you what I mean. Net-net, I don't know that you need to create any new schema for this.
-
I think that the front office staff should definietely be put under employer. For coaches, are you saying to create a "current coaches" property under football team? I think that is for sure the simplest way of going about this. I was just trying to make a way of creating a offensive, defensive, and special teams coaches property under football team. I thought that this might make it easier if someone were to want to query the information by the coaching type. It looks like this may not be possible to do though. If you check out the base I made, you might get an idea of where I was trying to go with this idea.
-
Yes, I'm inclined to create a new property for current coaching staff rather than breaking out separate properties for each class of coach. Along those lines, the thing that's a bit unfortunate is that we've got a separate property for head coach - but I think it probably makes sense to leave that as is. If you're cool with it, I'm going to go ahead and add that property.
More generally, I wanted to say thanks for the feedback on these domains. Curious whether you're most interested in refining schema or in populating data? Both? Are you more motivated in seeing Freebase get the schema right or do you have data that you want to load into the system and the schema isn't ready for it? Just wondering. Cheers.
-
I am interested in both. I have added quite a bit of information to these sports and I have noticed some different things that may make it better or even easier for the average user that comes across Freebase. I am still going to try and add all the coaches for baseball, but I have not had as much time this week due to final exams. From there, I will try and go ahead with the football coaches. What do you think of adding me as admin on football? I think that if we had two admins for a couple of these bases, then we would have a better chance of answering the discussion board quicker. Also, it is sometimes better to have 2 heads than 1 when it comes to making these schema changes and additions.
Thanks

Another thing I just noticed with football is how you have division and conference hidden. It looks like did this because it has a member of property already. I also noticed that you have done the same type of thing for baseball. Was there another reason for hiding these properties? If not, I think that our best solution would be to move the divisions conferences to the actual divisions and conferences property. If you would like for me to show you what i mean, I could do it in sandbox as an example. I just do not believe that divisions and conferences are actual sports associations, but maybe there are different views on this subject.
-
Division and conference were properties I added back when I first created the schema -- I later hid them when I added a more general model for it on the sports team schema. 'Member of' lets you query any sports team and find out what divisions, conferences, leagues its a part of. Its the same model we're using on locations... see the properties 'contains' and 'contained by'. We could additionally have the properties particular to a specific sport or league but that would then display redundant information on the topic page.
Does this make sense?
-
Yea it makes sense. Did you have any thoughts about making me admin for American Football?
-
Sure. Thanks for offering to help, and welcome aboard.
fyi, Kirrily is drafting a help topic that will outline the responsibilites of a commons admin -- will send along when she's got it done.
Cheers and have a good weekend!
-
Thanks. You have a good one too. I also wanted to let you know that I will not be around from Tuesday till Saturday. I will be on vacation. So if you needed to ask me something, I probably will not get back to you until Saturday or Sunday.
