Gerhard Fischer was a Oberscharführer in the Waffen SS during World War II who was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, which was awarded to recognize extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership by Nazi Germany.
Gerhard Fischer was born on the 12 November 1922 in Zwickau.
Fischer volunteered for the SS-VT and was posted to the 5th SS Division Wiking. He served as a platoon commander in the 3rd Battery, 5th SS Panzerjäger Battalion.
He was awarded the Knight's Cross during the Battle of Cherkassy when the Division was encircled by the Soviet troops.
With his platoon now only consisting of two vehicles he forced a breach in the Soviet line which allowed the Division to withdraw.
Fischer survived the war and is still alive in 2009.
