A young lieutenant (Alain Delon) has an affair with a baroness but decides to put an end to it when he meets Christine (Romy Schneider), a musician's daughter. It ends tragically when the Colonel learns his wife had this affair.
Schneider starred in this movie, a remake of Max Ophüls's 1933 film Liebelei (itself based upon a play by Arthur Schnitzler and starring her mother Magda Schneider). Romy fell in love with French actor Alain Delon after this film. They had a violent argument during the filming and Jean-Claude Brialy wasn't able to appease them. But they learnt to know each other and she left Germany to join him in Paris. Germany didn't forgive her. She became engaged to Delon in 1959.
