Morse and his Sergeant Lewis question the dead man's wife and son. They uncover that the victim had been threatened by Michael Steppings, played by Brian Cox, whose daughter was rendered brain dead while undergoing simple surgery at the clinic. Michael Steppings is interrogated for the murder then released when Morse uncovers an alibi for him. Wendy Hazlitt,played by Penny Downie, a nurse at the clinic, had an affair with Matthew Brewster.
John Brewster, the son of Matthew Brewster, confesses to the murder of his father, but Morse uncovers the truth; Michael Steppings committed the murder, and the son John Brewster killed Michael Steppings.
