Morse and his Sergeant Lewis begin a manhunt. They question his prison therapist, Dr.Esther Martin (played by Harriet Walter). Humphrey Appleton, played by Richard Griffiths, is a priest and an expert in the occult who provides them with information. Holly Trevors, wife of Steven Trevors (played by Gavin Richards), is abducted by Barrie, then released. Barrie demands to meet with Dr. Martin on Lammas day.
Stevens Trevors, Barrie's former partner, is murdered by him. Barrie is shot by a female police officer.
