Conrad Murray grew up in Trinidad. In 1989, he graduated from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. He subsequently completed residency in internal medicine at Loma Linda University in 1992 and fellowship in cardiology at University of Arizona in 1995, followed by fellowship in interventional cardiology. He was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine as a diplomate in internal medicine from 8/26/1998 through 12/31/2008.
He filed for bankruptcy in 1992, and is reported to have had judgments filed against him or his company totalling over $435,000. ABC News reported that Murray's partner in his Houston, Texas office had his license revoked and the clinic shut down in 2002 for improperly dispensing medication. Law enforcement officials reportedly called the clinic a "pill mill".
