Stewart was a senior staffer at the visual effects company The Orphanage. Stewart directed and wrote the apocalyptic thriller Legion. He directed the vampire-western horror film Priest. He is the founder and president of an animation/visual effects studio, SpeakEasy FX, which has created a series of shorts, under the series name Abby's Flying Fairy School, for the Sesame Street TV show. He has used actor Paul Bettany in the lead role on his first two directed features, Legion and Priest.
