Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), formerly known as Ifakara Health Research & Development Centre (IHRDC), is a non-for profit, district-based health research and resource centre. The headquarters, located in Ifakara town, grew from a small Swiss Tropical Institute (now Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute or Swiss TPH) field laboratory some 50 years ago, into an internationally-renowned research institute. IHRDC was established as an independent Trust in 1996, under the leadership of a Board of Governors and Board of Trustees chaired by the Ministry of Health (MoH). IHRDC was renamed IHI in 2008.
