"There’s not much information regarding the life of Italian artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610). We do know that his artistic genius was accompanied by a tempestuous character; that while he was famous among the people of his time, he was also persecuted for a murder; that he died shortly after receiving a pardon from the Pope and was later forgotten until the 20th century, when the extreme naturalism and dramatic chiaroscuro in his work were acknowledged as the pillars of modern art. All that information is present in this tribute to the artist that was made in the occasion of the four hundredth anniversary of his death, and in which he is reborn as a talented art student from a Las Vegas neighborhood known as Naked City. With a shuddered camera and an agile editing that reflects the growing alienation of its main character, I.M. Caravaggio dives into those dangerous streets as well as into the hypocrisy of artistic institutions, and finds –among blood, sex, and other excesses– yet another variation of the old motto live fast, die young, leave some work behind."
