Enjoy learning about: food, diet, biochemistry, and health; data, information, knowledge and wisdom.
A former database administrator, I am now a PhD student in Food Science at UC Davis using bioinformatics approaches to solve biological problems related to cultures/food/nutrient/gene interactions as they pertain to health. I deliver the derived knowledge about/solutions for these problems in rich interfaces that reside within content management systems in order to enhance end users' ability to make new connections as they strive to make assertions and/or hypotheses in various (and perhaps unfamilliar) levels of abstraction. I enjoy building semi-automatic sense-making workflows with structured and unstructured data almost as much as I enjoy baking my pear bread and oatmeal soufle...actually, I am often doing both at the same time ;)
Dark chocolate, fresh fruit, stinky cheese, bitter beer, and steel cut oats; Plone (python), R, and SQL Server are some of my favorite friends--(go ahead and hate on me all you want--I know M$oft mostly sucks, but SQL Server is totally great [and besides it is really Sybase anyway]).
oh, and i do like to play with my wii when I can't get outside to enjoy making my own vitamin D.
